The Golfer's Dictionary

A dictionary of popular golf terms from the perspective of an amateur golfer, if you have any suggestions then feel free to get in touch and I'll add them.

Sand Trap

A black hole filled with sand that leaves a great depression in golfer's when their ball approaches.

The total number of strokes taken to complete a round of golf, not including the 19th. This said however, attempting to match your score on the course in the 19th could be a damaging round both for your wallet and your ability to play another 18 holes.

The piece of paper provided by the course to record your scores on ... what ever they be.

A golfer who blames poor performance on their lack of fitness compared to that of their more junior opponents.

Set of Clubs

A collection of no more than 14 clubs where the main difference between them is the sound they make when cracked against a tree or snapped over the knee.

A cracking shot (typically for the club) which causes the ball to shoot off at a 90 degree angle. Players who constantly shank the ball are advised to take up something safer such as Tiddly Winks.

Short Game

The shots taken around the green including:

  • Chips
  • Bunker shots
  • Digs
  • Wise Cracks

Skull or Top

Striking the top half of the ball causing the ball to run along the ground. If off a tee then consider raising it, otherwise step baaaaaaaack.

Striking the bottom half of the ball causing the ball to head into orbit. In the event there is a stiff breeze, ducking and taking cover may be advisable.

Adding spin to a ball is typically considered a professional ability, however slicing or hook a ball is actually caused by spin too ... see you're a pro.
